Where and when does the club meet?

Interested players are invited to attend the weekly club meeting that takes place at Flower City Seniors Centre, which is located at 8870 McLaughlin Road. We play three games every Tuesday starting at 7:00 p.m.

How much does it cost to participate?

Residents of Brampton – $20.50/year + $1.10/visit
Non-Residents: $26.50/year + $1.10/visit
Visitors: $1.10/visit for maximum 2 visits

You must be 55 or older to participate in this program.

What is a night at the club like?

Players of all skill levels and abilities are welcome. This is a new program offered in partnership with the City of Brampton. Therefore, we will be improving it as we go along!

The Director will match players one-on-one for the night’s three games. (There are no three- or four-player games.) The Director generally matches players based on their level of playing skill. The main difference between playing at home and playing at our club is that at the club, both players keep score.

New players receive the list of all acceptable two-letter and three-letter SCRABBLE® words, and they are allowed to play with this list. If you want, you can download this word list yourself here.

Players also receive a handout explaining basic guidelines that everyone is expected to follow, which you may download here.

Do I need to bring anything?

Please bring a pen or pencil. We provide the game boards and everything you would need. But if you have your own SCRABBLE® board and tiles and wish to bring it, that’s great! If not, just bring your best smile.

Are the games timed?

Members can play with a clock, often a digital model. The clock regulates play time and ensures that games have the same start and finish. The standard time allotment in club play is 25 minutes for each player. Newcomers to the club are not obligated to play with a clock, but we encourage you to try it. You’ll find the game much more fun when you don’t spend a lifetime waiting for your turn! If you have a smartphone or tablet, you can even download a clock app. Just see our Apps page to find out how.

Do you maintain statistics?

As we go along, we may begin collecting stats so that you can track your progress!

How do I know if a word is really a word?

SCRABBLE® clubs and tournaments have their own lexicon, the Official Tournament and Club Word List. This lexicon differs slightly from the Official SCRABBLE® Players Dictionary, Fifth Edition. Some players at our club play with the international lexicon, Collins SCRABBLE® Words. If you are in doubt over the validity of a word, you may challenge it. The two players will consult a computerized dictionary to receive a ruling. NASPA members can download the official lexica at www.zyzzyva.net. Players may not consult the lexicon during a game. For more information on word lists, see the Lexica page.

Is the club open on holidays?

The club usually remains open throughout the year as long as the centre is open, and closed on statutory holidays, but it is important that you check the News page for the latest information on cancellations, postponements and location changes.
